The field of Evolutionary Computation covers a wide range of computational approaches, including: Evolutionary Algorithms – of which Genetic Algorithms are probably the most widely studied; Evolutionary Strategies; and Evolutionary or Genetic Programming.
What these approaches have in common is that they are based (more or less closely) on principles of biological evolution – using operators that are analogues of natural processes (such as genetic crossover, mutation and natural selection) to explore multi-dimensional parameter spaces and perform multi-variable optimisation. In the case of Evolutionary/Genetic Programming, computer programs, algorithms or functions are evolved from simpler sub-programs, mathematical operations or functions.
